Yesterday, after we left Kerbyville, we proceeded to follow the highway towards Crescent City, California, a town of about 8,800 people. The drive there was phenomenal because we were driving amidst the famous Redwood's of California.

Hwy 199 twists and turns through the Smith River National Recreation Area around these regal giants often running beside or zigzagging over the Smith River and Mill Creek. The deeper we got into the forest, the larger the trees became. We came to the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and the Howland Hill Road, a mostly gravel road meandering though this stately forest and we decided to take it. We just couldn't get over the size of these trees and just when we thought we found the biggest one, we would go around another turn and find a bigger tree. These trees can live to be 2000 years old; if only they could talk! We were absolutely awestruck! Surprised

From there we arrived in Crescent City and we decided to drive up the coast, then take a winding route back through the mountains. This road makes every crooked road we have been on to date seem incredibly straight. It was narrow, often with rocks and fallen trees on it making it barely passable, with sheer drop-offs and areas where the road has started to sink and it kept winding upwards. We started to see a bit of snow along the sides, becoming deeper and deeper until 26 kilometres and an hour and a half later, we encountered enough snow on the road to prevent us from going any further. We had to turn around and go all the way back to Crescent City. We got home at 11:45 PM exhausted and wired simultaneously, falling into bed near 2:00 AM.

Today we felt our age and did little but rest.Smile
