Before we left Ontario, it was our plan to spend the summer on Vancouver Island. We had both been to Victoria before so we knew we wanted to spend some time there and though Campbell River was completely foreign to us, we decided that we wanted to stay there for a month too. At the time, we had no idea how beautiful it was here nor did we know that Greg lived here; we just knew that this was where we wanted to be for a month and we are so glad that we came.

Campbell River is known worldwide as the "Salmon Capital" of the world and has been so acclaimed for over 100 years. A British journalist, Sir Richard Musgrave, with the aid of native guides in a dugout canoe, landed many large fish including a 70lb. Chinook and subsequently wrote about his adventure in a popular sporting journal, "The Field". That shared information has brought fishermen here from all over the world for a century, however there is so much more than fish here consequently a whole segment of tourists may be missing out on all there is to offer.

The beauty alone is worth the trip here but there are limitless activities to take part in, from hiking to swimming to golfing to bicycling...the list is endless. You can also indulge in some of the adventure activities such as whale watching, snorkelling with the salmon, white-water rafting and deep-sea diving. The climate in the summer is warm, sunny and dry and in the winter it rains moderately and the temperature is cooler. In the winter, you can golf here, ski at Mt. Washington (less than an hour a way) and fish off the pier all in one day. You can get here by ferry from Vancouver (1 hour 20 minutes) to Nanaimo a little less than a two hour drive away or use a commuter plane from Vancouver. The airport in Comox, 20 minutes away, has recently expanded and they are currently trying to attract some international airlines, which will make Campbell River even more accessible. For those of you looking for a beautiful place to visit, we can confidently recommend Campbell River and it's surrounding area. Aside from the many RV Parks, there are numerous oceanfront resorts, bed & breakfasts and hotels to choose from where you will be made to feel most welcome, making it an ideal destination.
